About Mental Health First Aid
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is basically the “DRSABCD” for Mental Health.
Most of us know about the benefits of physical first aid training, learning the skills to be a first responder to anything from a scraped knee to a twisted ankle - but what do we do when someone is struggling with their Mental Health?
Do you know how to spot the signs when someone is struggling?
What to say to them?
How to support them?
Who to connect them to for additional and on-going help?
That’s where Mental Health First Aid comes in.
MHFA is all about learning how to step in when someone is in a mental health crisis, or their mental health isn’t at their best. You don’t need to be a therapist or mental health pro — this course teaches you practical, real-world tools to recognize the signs of mental health issues and know how to respond in a supportive, caring way.
Think of it as the "first responder" role for mental health—just as you would assist someone with a physical injury, MHFA teaches you how to come along side someone and provide support when they are going through a Mental Health challenge.
Let’s be clear - you won’t learn how to diagnose or provide treatment for Mental Health Issues. You won’t learn how to magically click your fingers and make everything better in one moment.
But, it will equip you with valuable skills to listen to, support and guide those around you
Read on to learn more about what you will learn
Why should we care about MHFA?
The stats show a story - Mental Health challenges are more common than we may think, or maybe these stats don’t surprise you at all and that’s why you’re here.
The thing is, many people still don’t receive the support they need, they don’t ask for help, or they don’t have someone around them who knows how to offer it.
That’s where you, as a future Mental Health First Aider comes in.
By attending a MHFA training course, you’ll learn how to:
Spot the signs when someone’s struggling
Listen to them and give them a space to communicate and feel heard.
Offer support in a way that’s helpful
Help connect someone to the right resources, professional support and other support systems.
Respond in a crisis, whether it’s a panic attack, or thoughts of suicide
And yes, MHFA is accredited, internationally recognized and evidence-based training, meaning it’s not just some random course put together from someone’s hunches or vibes.
It’s been tested, fine-tuned, and grounded in research, evidence and evaluation. MHFA’s course curriculum is informed by guidelines developed using the Delphi Consensus Method and guided by the voices of people with lived experience of mental health problems, their caregivers, and professional experts.
